A downstream paddle taking in the sights of Bribie Passage, Golden Beach, Bribie Island and Caloundra in the distance.
SUITABILITY
Suitable for all level kayakers, but avoid windy days as can get choppy and be conscious of the tide's pull.
HIGHLIGHTS
Pumicestone Passage, the long channel that runs between Bribie Island and the mainland, is a fairly shallow stretch of water, with sand and mudflats, oyster beds and occasional jetties. The area is home to a variety of fish species such as flathead and flounder, bream, whiting and snapper, making it popular for fishing enthusiasts.
Paddle downstream in the Passage keeping Golden Beach on your left and Bribie Island on your right. Towards the end turn around and come back to your staring point. Definitely paddle with the tide; on an incoming tide start at Golden Beach; outgoing start at Bells Creek. You will be rewarded with a serene island outlook, anchorages and the chance to spot ocean birds and perhaps a stingray or two.
AFTERWARDS
Why not picnic at Jensen Park or neaby Porter Park. As you will be in the Pelican Waters precinct you could choose to take in an ale overlooking the canal at Pelican Waters Tavern. There are numerous coffee shops and cafes/restaurants off Pelican Waters Boulevard.
Nearby, Pelican Waters Golf Resort and Spa is a renowned golf course designed by Greg Norman.
HOW TO GET THERE
To the starting point: Drive to June Street, Golden Beach and launch from the Boat Ramp in Jensen Park. There are nearby toilets and a playground along this stretch of the Esplanade. (Note: this is not the same Esplanade as the one on Golden Beach closer to the main Caloundra township).
To the end point: The end point is the same as the starting point unless you want to determine a beach access point further up Golden Beach.
